Garden lovers from around Australia and overseas are expected to flock to Sydney in September when the city hosts the inaugural Australian Garden Show in Centennial Park from September 5-8, 2013.

A NSW Government event, The Australian Garden Show will be held in the Brazilan Fields West in Centennial Park, and is expected to quickly gain national and international credibility, attracting garden lovers from around the world.

Accommodation in the city is expected to be at a premium for the spring event, so garden enthusiasts are advised to book now to avoid disappointment.

Metro Hotel Sydney Central
and Metro Hotel on Pitt are two properties located within walking distance of Centennial Park, with both hotels offering a range of affordable packages.

Metro Hotel Sydney Central is the Metro Hospitality Group’s flagship property on the corner of Pitt and Hay Streets in the heart of Sydney. The hotel recently completed a two year refurbishment that saw a complete upgrade of its rooms and facilities, and its location opposite the Capitol Theatre in the Entertainment Precinct makes it the perfect choice for garden enthusiasts wanting to be close to the Park so they can make the most of the day.

Also located on Pitt Street, Metro Hotel on Pitt is a stylish boutique hotel closer to the city centre and better suited for guests wanting to mix a visit to the Garden Show with some shopping and sightseeing in the heart of the city. A short bus trip will take you to the show.

The event has been designed as the ultimate garden showcase and will appeal not only to experienced gardeners, landscapers and designers but also novices and the many people who just like to admire the handiwork of other people’s green thumbs and creativity.

The Australian Garden Show Sydney will combine display gardens designed by leading landscape architects, workshops presented by gardening gurus and personalities, a potting tent for children, products to purchase and a high tea marquee which, come nightfall, transforms into a floral cocktail bar setting – complemented by the now established Centennial Park Light Garden.

Renovations to Metro Apartments Darling Harbour Now Complete - Metro Hotels

Metro Hospitality Group has completed major renovations to its Sydney property Metro Apartments Darling Harbour, including the installation of new kitchens in all apartments, new Sealy beds, refurbished lifts, and the introduction of free high-speed Wifi throughout.

According to George Bedwani, Chief Operating Officer of Metro Hospitality Group, this particular property will maintain its high occupancy because of the strong Sydney  MICE and leisure markets as a result of the many events, concerts, trade shows and conferences which will take place this year.

“The Sydney Convention Centre will have its busiest year this year before its closure to build a new convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct which will be ready end of 2016.  Metro Apartments Darling Harbour is located in the heart of Sydney overlooking Darling Harbour so this will result in strong occupancy by not only MICE delegates but business and leisure visitors to the city”, George said.

“The Apartments are very popular and enjoy significant repeat business because of their central location, stylish accommodation and competitive rates.”

The Apartments are located in two buildings, the Sussex Street building offering larger, contemporary-styled apartments with views over Darling Harbour while the King Street
building has a more exclusive, intimate appeal. The properties are rated three and a half stars and offer a selection of 32 one-bedroom apartments, complete with fully-equipped kitchen, washing machine, dryer and ironing facilities, air conditioning and heating.

All apartments are priced to be affordable for mid-week and weekend getaways in the city or for interstate guests wanting an extended stay in Sydney. Parking is provided at a discounted rate at the nearby Kings Parking on Sussex Street.

Play tourist at Sydney Aquarium, Wildlife World or Australian Maritime Museum, or stroll across the footbridge to try your luck at The Star casino.

If you are looking for world-class shopping, walk east from your apartment and into Sydney’s retail heart, with the Queen Victoria Building, Westfield Sydney and flagship David Jones and Myer stores all a short stroll from your front door.

For unique Asian food and culture, head south to Sydney’s Little Japan, Little Korea and ThaiTown. Be sure to sample Yum Cha or a Chinese banquet from the huge array of restaurants in Sydney’s Chinatown, then keep walking through to the Entertainment Precinct and take in a show at the historic Capitol Theatre.

For sightseeing, head north beside the sandstone walls of the Hungry Mile and Barangaroo, recently marked for redevelopment. Stop at one of the beautiful harbourside cafes at Jones Street Wharf then continue around the harbour foreshore to The Rocks, a must to explore before venturing on to the Opera House and Botanic Gardens. This historic walk will show you the real Sydney but be warned – it is also popular for late-night ghost tours.

Metro Hospitality Group - The Year In Review - Metro Hotels

Our 36th year at Metro Hotels and the wider Metro Hospitality Group has seen us maintain our trading success as most properties continue to trade at high occupancies and robust room rates.

Print

The Company enjoys a strong digital presence which is resulting in increasingly higher online bookings through our own Web site www.metrohotels.com.au, and a large network of social media engagements, and growing GDS (Global Distribution System) activity.
Traditional advertising and other forms of marketing have given way to promotion of our products through emailed newsletters, blogs, sites such as You Tube, Pinterest, and the social media playmakers Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and so on.

Back in 1976 when the Group originated, most business was secured through phone bookings, walk-ins, and travel agents, together with group bookings from tour wholesalers, inbound travel coordinators, local Australian bus companies, government departments, airlines, and sporting organisations.
While much of our group business still comes from the traditional sectors, individual, corporate, and government bookings are largely being made through our own Web site or third-party Web sites such as Wotif.com, Bookings.com,  RatestoGo.com, LastMinute.com.au,  Quick Beds, check-in.com.au, as well as the GDS, and international online booking engines including those operated by the Expedia group.

With a large percentage of business emanating online, room rates have been squeezed during low demand periods while at peak times they move substantially higher. Yield management allows our properties to optimise their rates commensurate with the level of demand in the market.

Metro Hotels was one of the first groups to recognise the importance of the Internet to the travel industry, employing its first IT Manager in the late 1990s. The Company continues to pour significant resources into this field as online reservations within our group, and in the industry at large, have become, or are fast becoming, the core facilitator of business.

During the year the Metro Hotel Sydney Central, one of two hotels we operate in Pitt Street, Sydney, has undergone an extensive refurbishment over several floors. Refurbishment of the balance of the hotel will commence in early 2013. A re-make of the Metro Hotel on Pitt is also planned while lesser-scale refurbishments have been carried out at Metro Hotel & Apartments  Gladstone (Queensland), Metro Hotel Perth, Metro Hotel Apartments Darling Harbour, and Metro Hotel Bank Place. An additional floor of rooms was added to the Metro Inn Miranda which has since been re-branded a Metro Hotel.

During the year the Company’s association with the Abood family, owners of Metro Inn Ryde came to an end when the family sold the property to an owner-operator. The association the Company had with the Abood family spanned 35 years, with the Metro Inn Ryde being the Company’s second hotel.
Despite the change of ownership, the property will continue to be known as Metro Inn Ryde as a result of a licensing agreement with the new owner. Work is proceeding on preparations for the redevelopment of Metro Hotel Perth which will involve in the first instance a new wing comprising 45 rooms.  It is hopeful construction will be underway in early 2013.
